But with the right night time routine you can start saying goodbye to bad hair days and hello to the best morning hair of your life… so the next time someone says “You wake up like that?!” You can truly say, “YES!”
You see the thing is, how you care for your hair while you sleep determines how your hair looks and feels when you wake up each morning and in the long term!
I finally figured out a quick and easy routine that has been a total game changer for me and I know it will be a game changer for you too, so let’s get into it!

#1 SLEEP ON SILK PILLOWCASES
Aside from the fact that silk pillow cases are absolutely luxurious to sleep on ( and good for your skin) silk fabric is smooth and soft to the touch - allowing your hair to glide over the pillowcase with out any friction - friction causes frizz, breakage, and tangles so you want to avoid that at all cost!
Another benefit of silk material is it DOES NOT have absorbent properties like cotton. Sleeping on fabrics that are absorbent tend to soak up the moisture in your hair - such as leave in conditioners and serums - products that your hair strands need for hydration and health.
#2 BRUSH YOUR BEAUTIFUL LOCKS BEFORE BED
This is actually my favorite step of my night time routine. There is just something about brushing through my long hair that’s so relaxing and puts me in a zen - like state.
However, aside from the feel good perks brushing your hair before bed has many other benefits that contribute to waking up with pretty hair.
The first is getting rid of tangles! It’s next to impossible to go throughout a 16 hour day and not have any tangles in your precious locks!
Tangles can come from a simple a gust of wind, playing with your hair, products you used etc… and if you go to bed WITH tangles - you’re asking to wake up with tangles that are far worse and can be REALLY hard to get out - causing breakage and damage to your hair.
Another reasons is your scalp produces natural oils that are good for your hair strands - brushing your hair helps to evenly distribute those oils from your scalp all the way to your ends - hydrating and nourishing your hair naturally.
BRUSHING TIPS:
Use a gentle brush - I like using my wet brush
When brushing your hair make sure to start at the very bottom and work your way up to your roots. You want to be gentle with your hair, don’t rip through it in a hurry. I also like to hold my hair the the mid shaft when brushing my ends, this helps to prevent breakage and damage from the tension of bristles pulling on your hair.
Once you get to the roots and ALL your tangles are out - gently comb your hair starting at the roots all the way down to your ends - this will distribute the natural healthy oils (your scalp produces) evenly throughout your hair!
#3 PUT YOUR HAIR IN A DAMAGE FREE HAIR STYLE
If you go to bed with your hair down even the slightest bit of moment can cause friction, tangles, breakage, and just a whole lotta problems that will have you waking to hair that looks like a hot mess express!:
IMPORTANT: this does not mean just throw your hair up and call it a night! There’s specific “non damaging” ways to style your hair for bed - and the best part is I’m sharing 2 styles that are fast & easy for anyone to do!
STYLE OPTION 1 - BUN
TIPS:
DON’T use a rubber band or hair tie - these pull too tight causing tension on the roots and breakage to your hair strand. Also they leave a kink in your hair… and that’s not a good look!
DO use a silk scrunchie - these hold your hair in place, but loose enough that it won’t cause breakage, and the smooth texture of the silk will prevent damage to the strands ( just like your silk pillowcase).
DON’T pull it back in “messy bun” - this defeats the whole purpose of “sleeping with your hair up” - if you sleep with a “messy bun” it will be a creased / bent mess when you take it down in the morning.
DO create a twisted bun on the crown of your head and secure it with a silk scrunchie- preventing the hair strands from rubbing on your pillow & sheets, this helps to prevent breakage, tangles, and frizz.
STYLE OPTION 2 - BRAID
TIPS:
DON’T just put your hair back into a ponytail - this does not prevent your hair from getting tangled or damaged because your hair strands are still free to move all over the place.
DO put your hair back in a braid. Now your hair strands won’t be rubbing on your pillow as much - preventing friction, tangles, frizz, and breakage.
NEVER NEVER NEVER - go to bed with your hair wet, your hair is the weakest when its wet and sleeping on wet hair is guaranteed to cause you breakage, damage and tangles that will not be fun to brush out!
I’M SO EXCITED THAT THIS NIGHTLY HAIR ROUTINE HAS HELPED ME SAY GOODBYE TO MY “BED HEAD”
AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR YOU TO WAKE UP WITH GOOD HAIR TOO!
