Get Your Skin Ready For Takeoff In 3 Easy Steps
Whether you fly once every few years or you are a frequent flyer like me - you’ve probably experienced the negative effects airplane cabins have on your skin.
In my opinion there’s nothing worse than reaching your vacation destination accompanied by the discomfort of dry, itchy, tight, and irritated skin.
Why does my skin get so dry on planes?
Let’s start with the unavoidable issue… planes have low humidity, dry cabins, and recycled air.
Your skin is typically most comfortable when you are in an environment where the humidity levels range between 40-70 percent.
Want to guess the humidity level 30,00 feet up in the sky?! If you guessed a lot less you’re correct! Most airplane cabin humidity levels are less than 20 percent!!! That’s half the amount your poor skin is accustomed to.
Less humidity = less hydration = dry and irritated skin.
How can I protect my skin when flying?
After many flights and different routines I’ve finally nailed down a simple yet extremely effective way to prepare and protect my skin during every flight! If you want to know how to reach your next destination with your best hydrated, healthy skin keep reading!
3 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN WHILE TRAVELING
#1 DRINK WATER LIKE IT’S YOUR JOB
Make sure you drink tons of water on the day of travel. Before, during, and after your flight! I know having to use the restroom on an airplane is beyond annoying (especially for the person next to you) but I’ll choose that over my skin becoming dry like a desert any day.
Try to avoid drinking alcohol in flight… it vacation time, you’re excited, and the drinks are free — but drinking alcohol contributes to dehydration — and that’s the last thing you need in an airplane cabin.
Pop a bottle of champagne once you reach your destination!
#2 APPLY LIP BALM LIKE YOU’RE ADDICTED
I don’t know about you - but my lips are usually the first to show signs of dryness before the plane even takes off.
Keep a lip mask with you in your carry on and keep reapplying through out the flight so it never wears off.
Avoid licking your lips as much as possible. We naturally lick our lips with the intention of hydrating them — but in reality we contributing to drying them out even more because once your saliva evaporates it takes with it little the moisture your lips did have.
#3 APPLY THESE INGREDIENTS ALL OVER YOUR BODY
Prior to your flight give your skin the TLC it needs by applying the proper *in flight* skincare products.
You want to use products that contain hyaluronic acid and ceramides.
WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?
Hyaluronic acid is a water-holding sugar molecule our bodies naturally make. It can hold 1,000 times its weight in water within the cells of the skin - making it one of the most effective moisturizing agents.
WHAT DO CERAMIDES DO?
Ceramides create a healthy skin barrier by sealing in moisture and sealing out harmful elements.
Using these two ingredients together during a flight is essential if you want to prevent your skin from becoming dehydrated.
PRO TIP: You will want to apply a hyaluronic acid serum to clean skin. Allow your skin to absorb it for 60 seconds. Then layer a moisturizer with ceramides on top. If you are flying during the day don’t forget to apply SPF too!
