What Is Cleansing Balm Used For?

As a self-admitted skincare junkie I’m always trying new and innovative formulas to add to my skincare routine! My most recent favorite addition is cleansing balms!

Girl, if you haven’t added a cleansing balm to your skincare routine you are missing out! They are luxurious, hydrating, and beautifully melt away makeup, sebum, dirt and other skincare products.

Whether you wear a full face of makeup or just sunscreen and moisturizer a cleansing balm should always be the first step in your skincare routine.

If you’re interested in learning more about what cleansing balms have to offer before running out to buy a cult-favorite I’m breaking it all down for you in this post!

What is a cleansing balm and what is it used for?

Cleansing balms are luxurious, creamy, rich oil based cleansers that gently break down and help remove, makeup, other skincare products, dirt, and impurities without leaving your skin feeling dry and stripped of its natural oils.

Do you apply cleansing balm to wet or dry skin?

Unlike other face cleansers cleansing balms should be applied using dry fingertips onto dry skin because the oils in the balm need to interact with the oil on your skin before adding water — since water and oil don’t mix. Once you are done with the cleansing balm step you can use warm water to rinse or wipe it away.

Who can use a cleansing balm

EVERYONE!! The great thing about cleansing balms is you can use them no matter what skin type you have! Not only are they hydrating they also help rid your skin of any excess oils that may be causing breakouts or clogged pores!

Do I need a cleansing balm if I don't wear makeup?

Unlike makeup wipes cleansing balms aren’t limited to removing makeup. Even on days where you’re makeup free and rocking your natural beauty oil based cleansers are more successful than water based cleansers at breaking down sebum (oil), sunscreen, and pollutants.

Should you use face wash after cleansing balm?

Yes! Now that you have broken down all the makeup and impurities with your cleansing balm you will want to go in with a water based cleanser. Water based cleansers focus on your skin’s specific needs / concerns — ex dryness, oily, acne prone, sensitive, anti-aging, etc.

How to use cleansing balm on eyes

If I’m wearing eye makeup I like to cleanse my eyes before I cleanse the rest of my face. Warm up your balm between your fingertips, close your eyes, and with your fingers gently massage your entire eye area in circular motions until you feel the makeup is broken down enough to wipe away with a warm wet face towel.

I love that cleansing balms are so gentle on the eye area, there’s no need to rub hard or be aggressive — even if you have waterproof makeup on.

PRO TIP - make sure the cleansing balm you choose is okay to use on the eye area. If it’s not for the eye area the directions should say “keep away from eyes”

Here are of two of my faves that are safe for the eye area:

Monat - Makeup Vanishing Balm

Elemis - Pro-Collagen Naked Cleansing Balm

Can I use cleansing balm every day?

Absolutely!!! Cleansing balms are gentle, hydrating, and nourishing making them perfect for everyday use. In fact I get excited to use mine every day because it feels like I’m giving myself an rejuvenating facial massage. Anything that makes me feel like I’m at the spa in my very own bathroom is a winner in my book!

Who are cleansing balms for?

Cleansing Balms are for YOU if you…..

  • Want a quick-working, effective, and gentle cleanser.

  • Want to remove even the toughest makeup without drying out the skin.

  • Want skin that feels smoother, softer, and more hydrated.

  • Want a luxurious spa like step in your night time routine.

How do I use a cleansing balm: Step by step guide!

  1. Using a skincare spatula scoop a quarter sized amount onto your dry fingertips

  2. Gently rub your fingers together warming it up - you will notice the consistency gets a bit thinner and easier to move around.

  3. Using your finger tips apply the balm to your dry skin and gently massage it all over your face using circular motions.

  4. Take a cotton face towel soaked with warm water and gently wipe away all the balm until your face appears clean.

  5. Take a clean dry cotton face towel and gently pat your face dry.
